Amazon coming to New York?

State and Local Officials Make Push

UTICA, NY (WUTR)--- Amazon is looking for a new location to build its second headquarters. The Syracuse Region and the Mohawk Valley Region are teaming up to pitch the area to the company.

"The criteria they laid out-- metropolitan statistical areas of more than 1 million people and international airport service, so they are going to have a lot of options across North America. But they are also looking for a large workforce," Howard Zemsky of Empire State Development explained.

The competition isn't just amongst cities in the United States, but also in Mexico and Canada as well. The new headquarters would cost approximately $5 Billion and would employ 50,000 people. New York State as a whole is trying to promote itself.

"We're putting together incentives that will apply to Upstate as well as Downstate," Zemsky said. "We are being very fair in terms of the state trying to lure Amazon. At the end of the day, Amazon makes the decision. We are trying to work with different communities to kind of put their best foot forward."

Although its a possibility,  Amazon coming to the area is also a long shot.

"Whether we can get the big piece of what Amazon is doing is--- I don't want to say over ambitious, but it is a little out of our league in what we can handle," Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente said.

By merging, Picente is hopeful Amazon will see the area's potential.

"But to go at it alone wouldn't be anything Amazon would want to look at because the population is not there," Picente stated."So we are going to do it this way, and we really believe that we can be a factor in it. Let me put it that way."
